Enjoy the Lemonade and Pay it forward!
A sure sign of spring ahead – a lemonade stand!
My 8 year old daughter and I were taking a walk in our neighbourhood when we came across two small kids at a makeshift lemonade booth, offering us a refreshing cup for sale. Too bad we weren’t carrying any money! Their mother stepped up and suggested they give us a cup for free and asked us to “pay the kindness forward.” We all happily agreed.
A few minutes later while my daughter sipped her lemonade she asked, “what’s paying it forward?”
I explained the phrase was referring to kindness like a currency, that we take the spirit of generosity from the lemonade family and be let it grow into our day, sharing it with others as we go. We talked about how everyday positivity can turn a day around, that small acts of kindness can have a big impact, often in surprising ways.
My daughter was quiet for a moment, “being mean can do the same thing.”
When I asked her what she meant, she explained, “If one grumpy person is mean to someone else, then that can spread into that person’s day, then onto another and then another! It’s like when you cough on someone and make them sick!”
The wisdom of children!
I was amazed at how profound her simple observation was, how easily she explained the impact of our behaviour on each other and what I might call ‘energy manners’. I asked her, if we have an immune system for our bodies that helps us fight getting sick, how do we fight taking on negative energy?
We talked about being strong on the inside by holding love and positivity within us, apart from what is going on with other people. I explained that often the grumpiness that comes our way has nothing to do with us! If we take on all the negativity we are exposed to, then we can get really weighed down.
In the children’s course, we describe the impact of negative energy to the young students and give them a protective bubble to wear against the ‘arrows of negativity.’ We have a similar shielding system for adults in our foundational course, along with powerful light systems that has a direct connection to universal love and light.
I told her, “that’s why mommy meditates every morning, it fills up my positivity battery by connecting with love.”
While that lemonade kept us fuelled with positivity for the afternoon (and ready to share it), the deeper takeaway was how to stay steady within, knowing the outside world can dip and sway in unpredictable ways. Keeping a wellspring of love and kindness within is essential to spreading positivity on this planet.
They say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade – this experience with my daughter took that saying to another level. Maybe something like…Fuel your inner lemonade with love and share the sweetness!
I welcome you to pay positivity forward and see it spread into your day!
