Out of the hustle and into the feeling of the season

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” sings the classic Christmas carol across the speakers. I’m rushing around the kitchen, having just finished dinner for the family and a long work day. Being a college professor, things ramp up before they wind down at this time of year and trying to keep all the details of the upcoming holidays in my mind often feels like a pressure cooker with a countdown attached.

My 9 year old son and partner are singing along to the tunes and baking goodies, inviting me to join the fun, though all I want to do is get out of the kitchen and disappear for a while.

I’m rearranging the messy fridge when my son asks me, “Mom, what’s your favourite feeling of the holiday?” I stop with the fridge door still open, he continues, “Not your favourite thing to do, but your favourite feeling.” My favourite feeling?….

It’s the darkest time of the year and many different traditions celebrate the return of the light, as our Solstice expert Shaughna Born shared in a Solstice blog post last year. We celebrate Christmas in our home and I always loved it growing up as a kid. When my son asked me this question, I realized I was pretty far away from my sense of celebration.

I paused and closed my eyes and invited my senses to take over.

“The feeling of the dark cold outside the window and the coziness inside. Candles are lit and we are warm together.”

He smiles and shares.

“My favourite feeling is waking up Christmas morning and feeling the stocking at the foot of my bed. I don’t open it yet, I just lie there, excited.”

This exchange with my son was such a gift for me. By stopping and feeling, I realized I was in automatic pilot. It reminded me that while holidays inevitably involve tasks that need to be accomplished, it can also be a time of creativity and manifestation.

In our foundational course, Level 1, we teach that the principles of manifesting our reality are not only based on the things that we want, it’s based on a feeling and a focus we hold. There is no doubt that this can be a complicated time of year for many people. But taking a moment and deciding how you want to feel might be an important step to experiencing a Holiday Season that has meaning for you.

So I share the question with you: What is your favourite feeling of this season? How do you want to feel moving into the New Year?

Taking time to infuse with that sensation and invite it to guide your days may just turn the dial for a joyful step into the New Year.
